FIRST LOOK: Powerless on NBC – TCA 2017

On February 2nd, Wayne or Lose, the first episode of DC’s first comedy premieres on NBC. This workplace sitcom stars Vanessa Hudgens, Community alum Danny Pudi, and Alan Tudyk.

EPs Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker nerded out as they explained the NEW premise of the show (they also mentioned that it was 15 weeks into it when they decided to rework the “insurance angle”): Emily (Hudgens) starts her first day in R&D at Wayne Security, where she meets her boss, who happens to be Bruce Wayne’s cousin, Van Wayne (Tudyk).

“[Van is] a fun character to play. He has power and he’s not smart… he’s happy in his own ignorance,” says Tudyk.

Powerless, which takes place on Earth P (not to be confused with the Movie Universe, nor the CW-DC-TV Berlanti-verse), works hard to live within their reality while making sure they’re about normal people. “We were conscious about not name-dropping to name drop,” says Halpern.

Hudgens, who is best known for her work in musicals, explains her love of workplace comedies, siting it as her reason for wanting to be part of the show, especially one in the DC universe, “I love catwoman. Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman is my all-time crush”. As for her comedic performance, co-star Ron Funches says that she’s just as funny as the comedians in the cast (himself included, alongside Pudi, Christina Kirk, and Tudyk), adding that when something is asked of her “she’s game”.

Powerless premieres Thursday, February 2nd on NBC. Check out the trailer below:
