REVIEW: Doctor Who – The Edge of Reality – Game Review

As a whovian, I jumped at the chance to check out an exciting new Doctor Who game, Doctor Who: Edge of Reality, on my XBOX. As a casual gamer (or whatever experience level is lower than a casual gamer), attempting this game was both super fun and kinda challenging. Doctor Who: Edge of Reality starts by introducing the player to The Doctor (Whittaker), placing them automatically in a companion role, and sending them out to explore unique settings sprinkled with a variety of Doctor Who-niverse foes, including some classic monsters, such as Daleks. Although my struggles with the console made enjoying the game specifically difficult, when I played alongside a more competent player, we were able to dive into the story, adventure, and puzzle challenges as they were intended.

For a first hand look at the game, watch my first, solo, terrible attempt here, or enjoy a more in-depth play-through here, with help from Tauri Jay.

In total we played for about 2 hours and visited maybe 5 locations, but did not get to Tennant or Cybermen, yet were thoroughly engrossed and eager to keep playing for what was clearly indented to be hours of gaming.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality

Wield the sonic screwdriver and save the universe together with Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) in a new narrative adventure written by Gavin Collinson (Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins). Players come face to face with classic Doctor Who monsters including the power-hungry Daleks and metal clad Cybermen… and a brand-new foe, the CyberReaper.

  • Exterminate the havoc wreaking ‘Reality Virus’ which is threatening the universe, through ‘time glitches’ that distort the past, present and future
  • Explore immersive new environments like the ‘Chaosverse’: a corrupted alternate universe where worlds and timelines collide to create new adventures, encounters, and threats
  • Packed with easter eggs guaranteed to surprise and delight fans of the epic sci-fi series, returning for a brand-new season on 31 October 2021
  • Digital deluxe edition offers fans exclusive content, including additional Sonic Screwdrivers, as used by previous incarnations of the Doctor.

Maze Theory Studio Director Russell Harding said: “Players will love how they get to be part of a brand new Doctor Who story in Edge of Reality; and actively be immersed in the compelling adventure, alongside the two Doctors.
