Into The Woods was one of my favorite musicals growing up. I always loved the concept of mixing well-known stories (thus my love of ABC’s Once Upon A Time) as well as the idea that a wicked witch could manipulate people into unwittingly helping her achieve beauty – not sure why I loved that, but I did.
Disney’s rendition of the classic musical – which intertwines Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Barren Baker (not actually sure which story they come from…) – is a fun and special effect-filled version. With an all star cast, viewers shouldn’t expect anything less than fantastic!
Honestly, when I sat down to watch the film I believed that I remembered every moment, song, and lyric. Boy was I wrong! In fact, I’d completely forgotten the entire second half of the show – post-Happily-Ever-After. Additionally, I’d recently been singing the Prince’s “Agony” number and couldn’t recall where it was from.
Rest assured the star-studded cast is brilliant! From Meryl Streep to Anna Kendrick to Johnny Depp to Emily Blunt to Chris Pine (who seemed to channel William Shatner), every actor commanded the scene with a theatric power that rarely translates from the stage to the screen. My only complaint, and it’s all very personal, was that I remembered Little Red Riding Hood as a… plumper… girl – the girl who steals cookies and sweet breads from the baker – she should be a little rounder with all that carbo-loading.
