Return to the island of Berk, where 5 years have past since Hiccup (voice of Jay Baruchel), the heroic young Viking, has taught the residents of Berk the secret to dragon training. He is now in a relationship with Astrid (voiced by America Ferrera) and inline to take over as leader of his Viking community. How To Train Your Dragon 2 also brings back all our favorite characters, including Gobbler (voiced by Craig Ferguson), Hiccup’s friends, and the current leader of Berk, Hiccup’s father, Stoick (voice of Gerard Butler).

In the sequel – which I highly recommend viewing in 3D for the gorgeous landscapes and huge dragons – the audience is taken on a journey to the world outside of Berk, where others deal with dragons in different ways. Hiccup comes upon a man named Erik (voiced by Game of Thrones’ Kit Harrington) who leads a band of “pirates” as they trap dragons for the evil Drago (voice of Dijmon Hounsou). Drago controls an army of dragons by torturing them.
Also introduced in this animated spectacular is a do-gooder Dragon rider, Valka, voiced by Cate Blanchett,  who saves endangered dragons from Erik and eventually reveals to Hiccup that she is his long lost mother.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 beautifully reminds viewers the importance of friendship, family, and what it means to stand up for what you know in your heart is right, regardless of the naysayers.
